Nobody uses coal and gas anymore in EU?

FR

In a remarkable shift, the utilization of coal and gas for electricity production in the European Union hit unprecedented lows this year, as reported by analysts from the forward-thinking energy research institute, Ember.

The decline in electricity demand, coupled with a substantial upswing in renewable energy, contributed to a significant 17 percent "plummet" in fossil fuel electricity generation during the initial half of the year, as outlined by Ember. Concurrently, solar energy increased by a notable 13 percent, while wind energy saw a steady rise of five percent.

Notably, a total of seventeen nations achieved unprecedented milestones in the generation of electricity from clean sources. Greece and Denmark, prominently featured, exceeded the 50 percent mark for the very first time, while Denmark and Portugal soared past an impressive 75 percent.

Ember analyst Matt Ewen underscored the situation, stating, "Coal and gas have become prohibitively expensive and risky, leading the European Union to phase them out."
